Award Winning Architect Designed Residential Retreat in Wales
Designed by John Pawson, Life House is “a place for calm and reflection,” where simplicity, proportion, and light guide every decision. Set on a quiet Welsh hillside near Llandrindod Wells and Llanbister, this purpose built retreat was conceived as a sanctuary: a home that is both lived in and profoundly observed, where architecture, materials, and landscape converge to create an immersive, contemplative environment.
Partially embedded into the hillside, the house unfolds across a flowing, labyrinthine layout that responds quietly to the surrounding valley. Transitions between interior and exterior feel seamless as timber lined corridors open onto picture windows that frame the landscape like living paintings. The kitchen, dining, and sitting areas are understated yet generous, with polished terrazzo floors, white brick lined walls, and Douglas fir ceilings reflecting light and providing a calm, neutral canvas for filming and photography. Every detail, from bespoke furniture to carefully considered lighting, is designed to enhance presence and clarity. A black brick corridor marks the transition into the contemplation spaces, offering subtle architectural contrast.
The property features three contemplative bedrooms, each designed to support quiet reflection. The library bedroom, lined with therapeutic works of eastern and western literature, invites study and repose. The music bedroom is equipped with a high quality audio system and a curated selection of CDs, providing a space for focused listening. The bathing bedroom features an inset platform bath positioned to capture uninterrupted views over the Welsh valley. Beyond these private rooms, a cavernous contemplation chamber, partially buried into the hillside and topped with a retractable glazed roof, allows a direct connection to sky and landscape. Additional external terraces and viewpoints extend the experience, offering expansive views of mountains, valleys, and shifting light throughout the day.
The house is set along a sequence of walks conceived by artist Hamish Fulton, integrating movement through the landscape into the daily experience. Pawson’s approach embodies the philosophy that “architecture should serve the life within it,” and throughout the property, calm, order, and light are woven into every corner, creating an environment that is visually striking and deeply considered.
“The main thing is that people feel good. It is a visceral feeling. I get a lot of pleasure from clarity, and clear spaces that make you feel calmer. People tend to notice.” – John Pawson
As Pawson notes, “I wanted to create a sanctuary where guests feel at home, yet remain attentive to the elemental character of the landscape.”
For filmmakers and photographers, Life House offers exceptional compositional clarity. Long, uninterrupted sight lines, subtle material textures, and consistently balanced natural light create an ideal setting for stills and motion. The interplay between open communal spaces and more enclosed, introspective rooms allows for a range of moods within a single location, supporting narrative, editorial, and campaign work. The carefully curated furniture, bespoke lighting, and thoughtful detailing enrich every frame and provide flexibility for immersive storytelling.
