Brutalist Concrete Structure in East Sussex Countryside

About

This bold and unique Brutalist concrete structure is set within the rolling hills of the East Sussex countryside. Its mass is gradually being reclaimed by nature, with the building seamlessly merging into its landscape, creating a striking and contextual presence. Often described as an LA modernist or Brazilian villa, the building is enhanced by tropical planting and an outdoor swimming pool, adding to the exotic ambiance.

The internal spaces are defined by the interplay of light and shadow, with large openings on the southern elevations and the roof creating dramatic contrasts that guide visitors through the space. Seven blocks and zones are articulated through varying floor and soffit levels, while the exposed fair-faced concrete on walls, ceilings, and floors—both inside and outside—emphasises the building’s raw aesthetic.

The interior design is influenced by a personal collection of Mid-Century modern and vintage furniture, carefully curated and sourced over many years, adding warmth and character to the minimalist structure.
