LEGENDARY REGGAE CLUB IN WILLESDEN, NORTH WEST LONDON
About
The Apollo Club has occupied the ground floor of 375 High Road since 1969, when the Willesden Trades Hall Society leased the space in an attempt to solve the building's financial difficulties. What emerged was something far more significant than a practical arrangement. The Apollo became one of the first venues in Europe dedicated to reggae and Afro-Caribbean music, and for the community that built it, a rare sanctuary at a time when Black Londoners were routinely turned away from mainstream venues elsewhere in the city.
Over the following five decades the club welcomed some of the most important names in reggae. John Holt, Elton Ellis and Gregory Isaacs all played here. Bob Marley is said to have performed at the Apollo on his first visit to London, in the years before his name became known beyond the Jamaican diaspora. The club ran monthly nights that acquired an almost devotional following, drawing generations of the Afro-Caribbean community in north west London back through the same door, decade after decade.
The interior survives in its original condition. The design is tropical modernist in character, with period decoration, fixtures and fittings that have not been updated or restored. It is the kind of interior that accumulates meaning over time and cannot be recreated from scratch. The main room holds a stage and a capacity of around 200. Supporting spaces include a bar, green room, VIP room, kitchen, ticket office, toilets and storage rooms, giving productions the full infrastructure of a working club within a single location.
The Apollo closed in 2020 during the pandemic and has not reopened. The building is now in the stewardship of the Willesden Trades Hall Charity, and the spaces are available for film, photography and events pending restoration works
