Built by Thomas Scales, 7th Baron Scales, during the Wars of the Roses, the castle has passed through some of England's most influential families, survived periods of decline and restoration, and remained a private residence for centuries. Today, it combines authentic medieval architecture with elegant accommodation and event spaces, creating an atmosphere that cannot be replicated by purpose-built venues.

Internally, the castle offers a collection of characterful reception rooms filled with antiques, family portraits, leaded windows and original architectural details accumulated over more than five centuries. The Great Hall, oak panelled dining room, billiards room and additional reception spaces provide a variety of settings for dining, entertaining, presentations and informal gatherings.
