Set within 70 acres of parkland, woodland and historic grounds, The Soane House is a remarkable Grade I listed Georgian country house designed and remodelled by Sir John Soane, one of Britain’s most influential architects.

The house was developed by Soane between 1790 and 1816 for the Thornton family and is considered one of the most complete surviving examples of his country-house work. The surrounding landscape was subsequently shaped by the celebrated landscape designer Humphry Repton, whose plans for the estate survive in his Red Books.

The house retains an exceptional and unusually distinctive floor plan, with a sequence of generously proportioned period interiors including a grand dining room, drawing room, kitchen and living room. A particularly striking staircase leads to the upper floors, where the character of the house continues through a series of bedrooms and further historic spaces.

Beyond the main house, the estate provides considerable variety across its 70 acres, with parkland, woodland, a walled garden, cottages and historic outhouses creating a collection of contrasting settings within a single location. The grounds have a strong sense of history and provide opportunities for productions requiring both formal and more natural rural environments.

The history of the property is unusually layered. There has been a house on the site since at least the 15th century, before the Thornton family commissioned Soane to transform the estate at the turn of the nineteenth century. The landscape was developed in parallel with Repton, creating the relationship between architecture and setting that remains an important part of the property's character today.

The house subsequently served a number of different purposes, including a hospital during the twentieth century, before undergoing an extensive programme of restoration. The work included the conservation of the main house, its historic interiors and the wider landscape, allowing many of its original architectural qualities to survive.

Currently privately owned and available for hire, the property offers an unusually complete historic environment for film and photography. The house is presently unoccupied, providing considerable flexibility for productions, with on-site accommodation available for cast and crew and generous areas suitable for unit bases and technical vehicles.
